Never mind Mistletoe and Wine or Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time. Those of us who value integrity, talent and passion in music need to get on board the Rage Against The Machine for Christmas Number One campaign. It’s to save us from yet another sugar-coated bland X Factor one-hit-wonder dominating the chart next week, and we’ve only got one day to do it in.

Don’t wonder into HMV expecting to see a CD single on the shelves. This has to be done on the web.

“B-b-but aren’t they on Sony, and making money for Simon Cowell?”

RATM are signed to Epic Records, a division of Sony USA. Simon Cowell works for Sony UK, he won’t see a penny of the RATM sales. Besides, the campaign has never been against any record label whatsoever.

“Oh, aren’t you all a bit sheep-like, and isn’t that ironic considering the song goes ‘F–k you, I won’t do what you tell me’?”

Taking the line out of context doesn’t really make a point. The campaign is being done purely to have something decent at number one. Sure, the mass actions of tens of thousands of Facebook users all buying the same song might draw comparisons to the “We’re all individuals” scene in Life Of Brian, but really, you should see it as the “I’m Spartacus” scene.

For the campaign to be successful, we do need a mass of people all doing the same thing. And if you think that’s anti-rebellious, well, how did the Berlin Wall come down? How did the Poll Tax get axed?

Sure, Killing In The Name Of may not be the best song ever in the world, but it’s the closest thing to knocking Simon Cowell off his perch. Even non-rock fans have joined the campaign as they can’t stand the usual X Factor monopoly.

“But come on, this isn’t rebellion!..”

If Rage Against The Machine take the top spot, it doesn’t mean we can see Simon Cowell beheaded (unfortunately) and world governments toppled. None of the campaign founders have said it was an act of rebellion or anarchy!

It’s just a bit of fun. Like seeing Jarvis Cocker waggle his arse at Michael Jackson at the Brit Awards, Five Star being labelled “f–king crap” on a kids’ television show, or KLF throwing dead sheep at record executives.

If RATM get to the top spot, it’s great because it’s people power.
